History Lover - Feraklos Castle
The 12th century imposing Feraklos Castle can be clearly seen from Haraki and Agathi Beaches. You will need to drive up to the foot of the hill and then walk up the footpath to the castle. The fortress is located on a 150 metre steep and rocky hill and was one of the most secure castles of St. John’s Knights. Its strategic location, opposite the coastline of Asia Minor enabled the Knight’s to view enemy ships approaching. The fortress was also used as prison cells, by the knight’s who imprisoned the captives of war or foreign merchants for conducting illegal business on the island. The castle was then occupied by the Turks and then was left vacant.
Once you climb the hill, you will then climb a short flight of stairs to reach the main entry. Once you pass the main doorway you will be transported to another era. You will find yourself standing inside the inner ward where the Knight’s living facilities and the area where all domestic affairs took place. Simply majestic!
